  97.   Well, I think I've got it down.  The digest numbers stored in
  98. /info-mac/per/im are correct now.  The ones that have been mailed out aren't.

  165. buggy version.  This is the correct package to be released.

  167. This package contains two CDEFs that may be used by programmers in their
  168. programs.  One CDEF allows the programmer to define the appearance of
  169. pushbuttons (or normal buttons) by color icons (ICN# or ics#), and let the
  170. system worry about plotting the correct color depth.  The other is a point and
  171. click method for entering time and date info into the program.

  206. small (up to about 32,000 characters) styled text documents.

  307. This is just a thought, but couldn't you drag the printer driver to the root
  308. level of your System Folder, reboot, use the Namer to name it and then put it
  309. back into the Extensions folder?  That may be enough of a kludge to work.
  310.  
  311. Another thing you could try is dragging it to the System Folder root and
  312. aliasing it back into the Extensions folder.
  313.  
  314. I'm not sure if this would work, but it *SOUNDS* logical.  If the Namer
  315. expects
  316. the driver to be at the root level of the System Folder, then put it there!

  449.     I have darkside 4.0 and it plays at least some afterdark modules.
  450.     For example, /info-mac/gui/ad/clouds-10.hqx; 17K of im 201. Here is an
  451. afterdark module that works on darkside of the mac.
  452.     Note: At first, on default settings I got a crash and then I just
  453. tweaked settings once and didn't have any trouble resetting the settings
  454. thereafter. Now, when I lean my head back in my computer chair, I see
  455. beautiful clouds going by.
  456.     I have a sneaking suspicion that, with all my inits, my crashes
  457. shouldn't inform anyone else of anything to worry about.
  458.     So, you see, people do program DarkSide modules.

  479. I have used an Apple IIc.  I plan to switch over completely
  480. to Mac applications, but in the mean time there are a
  481. couple of my Apple IIc programs I still need to run.

  483. Can anyone give me advice on plugging in an Apple CPU
  484. card into my Mac?  How well does this work?  Any major
  485. problems?

  524. Having just migrated from At Ease v1.0 -> v2.0, I think I can answer this
  525. question.
  526.  
  527. The biggest changes are:
  528.  
  529. -At Ease can be configured for up to 10 users.  Each user will have their
  530. own set of applications, documents and system privledges.
  531. -Users can be granted the ability to rename and delete files, create new
  532. folders, and copy files to and from floppies.
  533. -There are 3 options for opening and saving files.  Users can be allowed to
  534. open and save anywhere on disk, only to a user's folder created by At Ease
  535. on the startup disk, or to floppy disks exclusively.
  536. -A user can be configured to go directly to the Finder at startup,
  537. bypassing At Ease all together.  A nice feature for Mac *experts*.
  538. -There's an option for At Ease to speak a button's name when the cursor is
  539. passed over it.  In addition, sounds can be attached to any item on a
  540. user's At Ease panel.  This is nice for young children unable to read yet.
  541.  
  542. -A program's monitor depth can be set on the fly by holding down the option
  543. key while clicking on its button.  Great for games.
  544.  
  545. IMO, users of At Ease 1.0 will find the upgrade to v2.0 worthwile.  Apple
  546. has added some nice features to make the Mac even easier for novice users.

  565. I suspect this is a FAQ, but I don't know where the that list is kept and was
  566. hoping someone could quickly reply to me at spencer@shiva.com with the
  567. answer.

  569. I am using system 7.1.
  570.  
  571. I have quite a few fonts in the fonts folder. Ihave PostScript files. Ihave
  572. Suitcase files with several Screen BitMap. Ialso have lose screen bitmaps
  573. without suitcases.
  574.  
  575. When print a document I know I have the right font files for (both screen and
  576. PostScript) I either get font substitution or any error saying PostScript
  577. file not found creating BitMap. Then I get PostScript error and nothing
  578. prints.
  579.  
  580. Anyway, I remember actually fixing this problem once for someone, but it was
  581. months ago, and I can't remember how. It had something to do with too many
  582. suitcases or not enough suitcases or something like that. (Basically how the
  583. fonts where stored in the fonts folder made a difference).

  603. A Centris 660AV loaded with assorted entensions and control panels has a
  604. problem with "Get Info".  The keyboard command is changed to Command-Option-W
  605. which can't be invoked (except by mouse).  When I try to open the control

  607. folder from the Apple menu the computer shuts down Now Menus, the Get Info
  608. returns to Command-I but still can't be used by command and by mouse, and I
  609. still can't open the control panel folder from the Apple menu.

  611. There is a conflict or incompatability somewhere because when the extensions
  612. are turned off with shift on startup, there is no problem (and no extensions)

  634. Although NEC 5FG (which has been replaced by 5FGp) and Sony 1730 always get
  635. good magazine reviews, they're not among my favorites. E-Machines T16II or
  636. Sigma Design ErgoView 17 (both made by Mac Innovision) have sharper images
  637. (the most important factor, IMO). However, Mac Innnovision's quality
  638. control is not as good as NEC's or Sony's (so the probability that you may
  639. get a defective monitor is higher). There're two new monitors you should
  640. also consider: Sony 17se and Nanao T560iW. Both are a bit more expensive
  641. (especially the Nanao), but they're arguably the best monitors money can
  642. buy. The Nanao T560iW is similar to the legendary T560 with the added
  643. energy conserving feature. The Sony is brand new and has all the features
  644. (flatter tube, continuous scan, high scan rate, color control,
  645. energy-saving mode, etc.) you could ever want.

  662. CopyDoubler 2.0.1 just did something a bit strange when I tried copying a file
  663. from within a doubly-nested list view, so I thought I would ask
  664. if anyone else has seen something like this. I've been using it without
  665. problems on a 7.0.1 (tuned) system for quite a while. Recently I installed
  666. System 7.1 on my cartridge drive and have been running 7.1 off the cartridge
  667. for 5 or 6 days now. Today I had a folder open in a list view on my internal
  668. drive (not the cartridge); within the folder was another folder whose list
  669. view was also open, and within that folder was an application file.
  670. I tried to copy the application file to the cartridge drive, whereupon
  671. CopyDoubler popped up a window saying that a file named '%s' already
  672. existed at the target location, and did I want to replace it. I
  673. cancelled the copy and tried again; same thing. I tried to copy the file
  674. to another folder on the same drive, by option-dragging it; same response.
  675. Finally I closed the list view and did a direct open on the folder
  676. containing the application; it opened (in a list view) and I tried once
  677. more to drag the application file to the cartridge drive. This time it
  678. worked.

  708. I too had problems with corrupted Word files crashing the damned
  709. application. I found that the solution was to give up using Microsloth
  710. products (the only one I will use is Excel).
  711.  
  712. Given that the author is in Chemical Engineering, he will find that there
  713. are better document-processing systems around, particularly for documents
  714. that contain mathematics (Word's equation editor is a joke, and
  715. alternatives, like Expressionist, whilst representing an improvement, are
  716. still a long way away from high-quality mathematics typesetting). Some of
  717. the superior solutions are even shareware: you can get an incredibly
  718. high-quality and easy to use system, complete with spelling checker, for 55
  719. US dollars (and it handles equation, figure, table, and citation
  720. auto-numbering, together with automatic positioning of tables and figures
  721. on the page). I'll let you all guess what the 55 dollar system is (hint: it
  722. has been used to produce top-quality textbooks, typeset AMS and IEEE
  723. journals, etc.).

  769. I raised the issue of these problems about 6 months ago in terms of
  770. my Trackball freezing up on startup.  At the time I recieved alot of
  771. useful comment from the net and summarized the findings.  It is
  772. essientially a problem of Apple not following their own specs
  773. according to the Trackball manufacturers.  Kensington at the time  put
  774. out a software upgrade, but others who do things in hardware have
  775. still not solved the problem.  It is interesting that Apple is still
  776. grappling with the problem, and that it is not just occuring to third
  777. party equipment.  For a system that has built its reputation on
  778. sticking to a specific set of specs (relative to the IBM world) it is
  779. disappointing.  In fact it is the only complaint I have against my Duo
  780. 230, "I want to use my ITAC trackball!!!!!!"
  781.  
  782. Enough flaming (well sputtering at least) it is time that Apple got
  783. off their duffs and fixed the problem with the ADB so that periferals
  784. developed to meet their specs will work!!!!

  803. Not so long ago when I started up my PB I got an "unimplemented
  804. trap" bomb referring to the Apple Fax software installed on the system.
  805. (I have an Express Modem on my machine).
  806. I rebooted and the INIT icon for Fax Extension came up with a big
  807. X thru it.
  808. So I reinstalled the system, reinstalled the fax software, rebuilt
  809. the desktop file, checked for viruses and for bad blocks (Disk Tools
  810. and MacTools).
  811. Still get the X-ed out init icon, and, of course, the fax doesn't
  812. work.
  813. Does anybody have any idea of what's going on?

  824. I have good news for those people like myself who have been searching
  825. far and wide for software to translate between English and other languages.
  826. Thanks to an earlier tip in the archives, I have found out that
  827. Globalink is transferring its software Power Translator Professional to
  828. the Macintosh platform.  There will be versions which will translate
  829. Spanish, French, German, or Russian to or from English.  The software
  830. will be available at the end of this month, it is claimed.

  832. I should point out that the software is far
  833. more than a two-way dictionary.  The
  834. software contains a full-sentence translation engine which Globalink
  835. claims can reach accuracy levels of over 90\% at speeds which can
  836. exceed 20,000 words per hour.  Dictionaries are modifiable to handle
  837. specialty words.  There are also special subject dictionaries for a
  838. few fields which act as filters which can speed up translations.
  839. As far as I know, there are already versions for DOS, OS/2, and Unix.
  840.  
  841. The price for the Macintosh version is $1195.  This may sound
  842. expensive, until one considers the power of the software and
  843. its uniqueness on the Macintosh platform.  I should point out
  844. also that this price includes a license for up to 5 users.

  1227. protection dongle I must add that no solution was found !  I'm from
  1228. Israel, I use hebrew system, I also use Hebrew Nisus (which is great) but
  1229. the dongle problem is a real problem from some aspects:
  1230.     * I know some unhappy Duo owners + some unhappy PowerBook owners
  1231. cause walking around with this thing hanging from your computer is not a
  1232. nice thing, especially when it can come off whenever it feels like and
  1233. than you can say goodbye to your document if you're luckey and to your
  1234. ADB chip if you're not...
  1235.     * It really makes your life hard when you need to move it from
  1236. one machine to another - shut off and on again. It's also not tight like
  1237. the regular ADB keyboard or mouse so many times it dissconnects in the
  1238. middle of your work (refer to the previous section for details on what
  1239. happens then :-().
  1240.     * Conflicts when having to chain a few diffrent dongles... (but
  1241. the problems described here are those of the PETlock).

  1243.     I don't think I'm going to change anything by posting this, but I
  1244. think the reactions from the other users were unfair. The fact that we

  1372. A couple of days back John Armstrong wrote regarding a problem with a
  1373. Quadra 800 that seemed to be using 20Mb in the system.
  1374.  
  1375. The solution is to enable 32 bit addressing. Without it, the Mac OS can
  1376. only address 8MB of real memory. As he stated, when he trimmed the
  1377. system down to minimum, it showed 18.5 MB in use, which means that the
  1378. system was consuming 2.5MB (about right for 7.1 on one of the large
  1379. machines), plus 16 MB of memory that it couldn't address otherwise.
  1380.  
  1381. Try 32bit addressing... you'll like it (and so will your Mac)... ;)

  1394. I have owned a Duo230 (8meg ram, sys7.1, enabler201) for about a month
  1395. and GNRNRNNRNRRRRNNRGRNR have had masses of problems with it (two new
  1396. motherboards and a new harddisk have had to be installed). Anyway, the
  1397. next problem is not hardware, but how to best create a RAM disk.
  1398. I want to be able to have a small system and MSWord (altogether approx
  1399. 4.1meg) operating from a RAM disk (as startup disk) when on battery
  1400. power.I've tried AppDisk, RamDisk+ and RamDiskHelper, but none of them
  1401. seem to do the job. RamDisk+ claims to be able to run the system on the
  1402. harddisk without accessing the harddisk, but I haven't been able to get
  1403. this to work. RamDiskHelper creates a RAMdisk fine, but the system I put
  1404. on the RAMdisk isn't recognised when I restart with the RAMdisk set as
  1405. the startup disk. AppDisk can't be used to create a startup RAMdisk.
  1406.  
  1407. What can I do? Am I doing something wrong? (I can do everything I want if
  1408. I use the system's memory control panel to create a RAMdisk, but this is
  1409. a pain, as you have to boot three times, before the RAMdisk can be the
  1410. startup disk).

  1458. the Laserwriter 8.x.x distribution which is available from

  1477. Occasionally, it's reported to me via a window (on the poorly machine) that
  1478. a file that I need to copy across is in use on the ci (by somebody, or I
  1479. forgot to quit it) - which means I have to sprint to the other end of the
  1480. building and turn it off, then try again.
  1481. Question: what is a good way of solving this problem (other than getting
  1482. more organised)? ie. how can I send a QUIT AppleEvent to particular apps on
  1483. the remote ci, either with or without a warning at that end?
  1484. If I bought or got somebody benevolent employer to buy AppleScript could
  1485. this be used to write something of that sort - bearing in mind I'm not
  1486. really a programmer, although I'd give it a shot if need be.
  1487. SOmething that sits in the ci, looking at the net and waiting for these
  1488. commands.

  1620. 1.  Statistica/Mac has a survival analysis module with a Macintosh interface

  1622. 2.  Systat 5.x can be extended by an add-on module with a DOS-like command
  1623.     line interface; it should have highly reliable algorithms. A version with
  1624.     Macintosh interface should not be expected before 1994.
  1625. 3.  JMP, also known for it's solid algorithms, will introduce survival
  1626.     analysis in version 3 which is expected to ship in December.
  1627. 4.  There is a survival module for SPSS, a large statistics program of
  1628.     mainframe origin.
  1629. 5.  another major player in statistics software for the Mac is unlikely to
  1630.     stay behind the competition by offering an "incomplete" program ...

  1688. For LaserWriters, we had to put a copy of the LaserWriter driver into the top
  1689. level of the System 7 System Folder in addition to the copy in the Extensions
  1690. folder in order to use the Namer.  I imagine this might work for AppleTalk
  1691. ImageWriter drivers, too.  Good luck!

  1724. monitors" in the range of 17" diagonal to 21" diagonal. From talking
  1725. with a monitor vendor I've discovered that ALL the vendors mean is
  1726. that if you can figure out how to get them up there you could see
  1727. two pages. One vendor told me that his monitor could show two pages
  1728. of a Microsoft Word document in Print Preview (all monitors can; you
  1729. just cannot EDIT the document).

  1833. I've seen press releases and glossy ads for WP 3.0, but no impartial
  1834. descriptions. I did not see mentioned whether the program will have an
  1835. outlining capability (one of Word's best bells-and-whistles). To be a
  1836. serious contender in this category, it would have to allow
  1837. collapse-and-expand. (The outlining feature in DOS WP5.1 allows you to
  1838. select and move families but not collapse or expand. This is apparently
  1839. remedied in WP6.0. I'm wondering if the remedy has carried over to the Mac
  1840. version.) It would also be nice if, like Word, it allowed you to generate
  1841. a table of contents directly from the outline. Anyone know?
